Today we go Around the World on Wednesday with another Sketch Challenge. We love a Sketch Challenge for they’re a great starting point for a card design. I decided to use the new Seaside Wishes Bundle for my design today, which I hope you’ll like.

If you’ve hopped over from my dear friend Aurélie, then I’m sure you’ll be familiar with the Sketch layout that we’re working with. If you need reminding or you’ve not seen it, this is the layout that we’re following.

Looking at this fabulous layout, I interpretted the vertical stripes as the sea and decided to create waves from cardstock. Taking some scraps of the Mix & Match Calming Creek Cards & Envelopes, I proceeded to rip along lengths of cardstock and paper to create three blue waves. To this, I was to add a large die cut and embossed Sand Dollar. Using Basic Beige cardstock I was able to layer this between the Die and the Embossing folder to both cut and emboss the image at the same time. This gave great detail and definition.

Creating realistic looking Sand
To create my sand, I worked a layer of Crumb Cake with a Bone Folder, breaking down the fibres until pliable. Taking a pokey tool, I was able to split the layers and separate the cardstock to reveal a faux suede texture that was perfect as faux sand.

Blending the sand layer with Crumb Cake Ink and stamping some speckles on it, I was able to make it look even more realistic. One final crumple and it was adhered to a Basic Beige matting layer.

A white on Crumb Cake Heat Embossed sentiment was fussy cut and added upon Dimensionals before a scattering of embellishments. The Flat Pearls were the perfect addition to the theme of this card and Linen Thread whispy and almost nautical in appearance.
I hope you have enjoyed my share today and I hope you’ll hop around the world on Wednesday to see what the rest of the team have to share.

Next up on our hop around the world this Wednesday is our fabulous leader, Angie McKenzie. Her work is just beautiful and I can’t wait to see how she has interpretted this sketch.
Thank you for hopping by today. Enjoy!

Oh Mikaela, how lovely! Love all the details, especially how you separated cardstock to get a sand effect, but that Beige Sand Dollar!!! It’s stunning. So much detail. xxx
The faux suede look and all the details makes such a beautiful card. I was a bit iffy about this set – i may have to rethink! xx
I so love this technique of breaking down the cardstock fibers… the effect is always delightful to the touch… so transforming it to soft sand was brilliant!!! Love the weathered feel of the torn strips of card, the sand dollar and the silky, smooth flat pearls. WONDERFUL INTERPRETATION OF THE SKETCH, MIKAELA! Thanks for the inspiration as always. xxxx
MIKAELA, THIS IS GORGEOUS! i FEEL LIKE i AM WALKING ALONG THE OCEAN AND CAN ALMOST FEEL THE SAND BENEATH MY FEET! hEADED TO THE ONLINE SHOP TO ADD THIS BUNDLE TO MY CART NOW!
As I look out my window and see winter has arrived, this sea scene was a literal breath of fresh air. It took me straight to the beach with its evocation of waves and sand. Lovely card! 🙂
Gorgeous! Love how you created the sand. Genius and I look forward to trying it.
Nice project Mikaela! I love the idea of using the cards and envelopes set by tearing strips. I’m still dubious about this set – anything about the sea, I love but it’s not translated in France – But I really like what you’ve done with it, thanks for sharing!
So creative! Thanks for sharing Mikaela.
aww Thank you Kylie xx
