Welcome to the Around the World on Wednesday hop, where this month we’re doing a Sketch Challenge.
A warm welcome if you’ve hopped on over from my dear friend Aurélie‘s blog
A Sketch Challenge can be a fabulous place to start when setting to designing. I loved the look of this layout from the moment I saw it and wanted to work with Horizontal stripes.
Using Shimmery White Cardstock, allowed me to add an element of water to the cardstock. Taking my Water Painters in two widths and Balmy Blue ink, I created stripes across my cardstock. Leaving the lines to be organic and not too straight, helped add to the relaxed feel of this card.
Sticking with Shimmery White Cardstock, I stamped these images from the Cottage Rose Stamp Set using Black Memento Ink. Although I could have coloured using the Water Painters, I decided to colour using Alcohol Blends Pens.
A series of Yellow tones and Greens for the leaves and my images were simply coloured. Adding a darker tone where Stampin’ Up! have added lines for shading within the images helps.
I die cut these images and fussy cut the centre of the largest flower to help add height and interest. The formation of the flowers and leaves represented the circular shapes within the Sketch.
I hope you like my share today and can see the simplicity of this sketch challenge. Do remember to hop on over to see what the others within the group have to share.
Next up in the hop is Annette Ball, who’s inspiration I can’t wait to see.
Thank you for hopping by today …. Enjoy the rest of the hop and all of the inspiration throughout.

The different widths of stripes are so effective. Beautiful colour combo and card x
Such a very pretty card!! I love your colour palette x
Such a beautiful card Mikaela … those water colour stripes in different widths are totally amazing!!!
Love all your watercoloring. The variation in the stripes adds a really nice touch
Love your stripes!! almost like you knew others would use them too and you totaly upped your game!!
Awww Thank you Annette, I enjoyed this sketch layout and think it’s funny how so many of us interpreted it the same or in a similar way x
That’s lovely, mikaela! I like the choice of balmy blue for the background. I think you’re enormously brave to tackle freehand stripes but it does add a relaxed feel and the use of two widths really works.
Oh Jan, I took a deep breath at the beginning and held my breath throughout. It paid off though. I wanted a relaxed feel to it and felt that using a straight edge would be too perfect and formal. I’m pleased you like xx
Such a nice idea! I love working with watercolor basemaps too and the map is so fabulous! Thank you for sharing Mikaela!
aww Thank you, I’m so pleased you like x
